Living with Congenital labioscrotal agenesis-cerebellar malformation-corneal dystrophy-facial dysmorphism syndrome

A rare genetic syndrome with developmental delay, cloudy corneas, balance problems, and differences in the genitals, nipples and face.

Understanding Congenital labioscrotal agenesis-cerebellar malformation-corneal dystrophy-facial dysmorphism syndrome

This is a rare genetic syndrome with several birth differences, including developmental delay, cloudy corneas and absent labia majora or scrotum.

People have global developmental delay, intellectual disability, absent scrotum or labia majora, and absent or underdeveloped nipples. Both corneas are clouded, and facial differences include a small head. Shaky eye movements and an unsteady walk occur. Brain scans show a small cerebellum and pons. It is seen in newborns.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Severe intellectual disability
  • Cloudy corneas
  • Absent scrotum or labia majora
  • Small cerebellum and pons
  • Shaky eye movements (horizontal nystagmus)
  • Balance problems and unsteady walk

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists, eye disease specialists, genetic specialists and urinary and male reproductive system specialists.

  3. Consider genetic testing

Changes in MAB21L1 are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.
