Living with Combined immunodeficiency due to STK4 deficiency

A rare inherited immune condition with repeated viral, bacterial and fungal infections, plus some heart differences.

Understanding Combined immunodeficiency due to STK4 deficiency

Combined immunodeficiency due to STK4 deficiency is a rare inherited condition in which T and B immune cells are low.

People have low lymphocytes and neutrophils that come and go. They get repeated infections of the skin, airways and blood, including warts, molluscum and skin abscesses. Some have autoimmune anemia or heart defects present from birth. It begins in childhood.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Repeated viral, bacterial and fungal infections
  • Repeated pneumonia and sinus infections
  • Warts
  • Ongoing yeast infections of skin and mouth
  • Recurring fevers
  • Heart wall openings (atrial septal defect)

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include allergy and immune system specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Consider genetic testing

Changes in STK4 are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.

  4. Connect with expert centers

Immune Deficiency Foundation may keep lists of experts for this condition.
