Living with Chylous ascites

A rare condition where lymph fluid collects in the belly, causing painless swelling.

Understanding Chylous ascites

Chylous ascites is a rare form of ascites in which lymph fluid collects in the peritoneal cavity (the space in the belly).

It is usually due to cancer in the belly, liver cirrhosis, or complications of belly surgery. It causes painless but progressive swelling of the belly, shortness of breath, and weight gain. GARD lists onset at any time in life.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD says they usually include:

  • Painless, growing belly swelling
  • Shortness of breath
  • Weight gain
  • Fluid in the belly (ascites)
  • Swelling from lymph fluid (lymphedema)

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include digestive system specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
