Living with Chronic beryllium disease

A lung disease that develops in some people who become sensitive to beryllium, a metal they were exposed to at work or in the environment.

Understanding Chronic beryllium disease

Chronic beryllium disease is a lung condition with inflammation (granulomas) in people who have become sensitized to beryllium.

It occurs in some people who develop beryllium sensitization, an immune response to beryllium exposure at work or in the environment. The sensitization comes first, and lung disease may follow. GARD lists onset in adulthood.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Ongoing dry cough
  • Tiredness (fatigue)
  • Weight loss
  • Chest pain

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include lung and breathing specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.

  4. Connect with expert centers

National Jewish Health Beryllium Program may keep lists of experts for this condition.
