Living with Chromosome 6pter-p24 deletion syndrome

A missing piece at the end of chromosome 6 that causes learning disability, eye differences, hearing loss, and distinct facial features.

Understanding Chromosome 6pter-p24 deletion syndrome

Chromosome 6pter-p24 deletion syndrome (distal monosomy 6p) is a chromosome deletion syndrome with a recognizable set of features.

Features include intellectual disability, eye differences, hearing loss, and facial differences. GARD lists onset during pregnancy, at birth, and in infancy. It also lists a hole in the wall between the heart's upper chambers.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Delayed speech and language
  • Eye differences, such as cloudy cornea
  • Crossed eyes (strabismus)
  • Broad forehead
  • Differences in teeth
  • Hole in the heart wall (atrial septal defect)

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists, eye disease specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
