Living with Chromosome 3q29 microduplication syndrome

An extra copy of a small piece of chromosome 3 that may cause delays and learning differences, though many people have mild or no signs.

Understanding Chromosome 3q29 microduplication syndrome

Chromosome 3q29 microduplication syndrome is a condition from a small extra copy of a piece of chromosome 3 in each cell.

Features vary widely. Some people have very mild or no signs, and the duplication is found only after a relative is diagnosed. Others have delayed development, especially speech, and intellectual disability or learning difficulties. Most have no major birth defects, though eye differences, heart defects, and a small head can occur. It may raise the chance of overweight or obesity.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Global developmental delay
  • Intellectual disability
  • Low muscle tone (hypotonia)
  • Small head size (microcephaly)
  • Obesity
  • Differences in teeth

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include genetic specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
