Living with Cholesteryl ester storage disease
An inherited condition where fats build up in the liver and other organs because the body lacks an enzyme.
Understanding Cholesteryl ester storage disease
Fats (lipids) build up in tissues and organs, and calcium deposits form in the adrenal glands. The liver is most severely affected in most cases, and some people develop cirrhosis that can progress to liver failure. Fatty buildup on artery walls (atherosclerosis) can narrow arteries and raise the risk of heart attack or stroke. GARD lists onset from childhood to adulthood.
Signs & symptoms
Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:
- Enlarged liver
- Enlarged spleen
- Liver failure
- Hardening of the arteries (arteriosclerosis)
- Diarrhea
- Nausea and vomiting
Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.
