Living with Cholangiocarcinoma

A group of cancers that start in the bile ducts, the tubes that carry digestive fluid from the liver to the intestine.

Understanding Cholangiocarcinoma

Cholangiocarcinoma is a group of cancers that begin in the bile ducts, the tubes that connect the liver and gallbladder to the small intestine.

It is grouped by where it starts: inside the liver (intrahepatic), where the main ducts leave the liver (perihilar, the most common), or in ducts outside the liver (distal). It usually causes no symptoms early on and is often found after it has spread beyond the bile ducts. Symptoms often appear when a tumor blocks the ducts.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Yellow skin and eyes (jaundice)
  • Itching
  • Extreme tiredness (fatigue)
  • Pale, clay-colored stools
  • Dark urine, loss of appetite, or belly pain

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include cancer specialists and digestive system specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.

  4. Connect with expert centers

Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation may keep lists of experts for this condition.
