Living with Chédiak-Higashi syndrome
A condition that affects many parts of the body, especially the immune system, with repeated infections and light skin, hair, and eyes.
Understanding Chédiak-Higashi syndrome
It damages immune cells, so they are less able to fight viruses and bacteria. Most people have repeated, persistent infections starting in infancy or early childhood. These infections tend to be very serious. It also causes oculocutaneous albinism, which makes the skin, hair, and eyes lighter in color.
Signs & symptoms
Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:
- Repeated, persistent infections
- Light skin, hair, and eye color (albinism)
- Easy bruising
- Abnormal bleeding and nosebleeds
- Problems with platelets (blood clotting cells)
- Retina color changes
Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.
Diagnosis
- 1Talk with your doctor
Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.
- 2See a specialist
Specialists who may be involved include allergy and immune system specialists, blood and bone marrow specialists, brain and nervous system specialists and eye disease specialists.
- 3Consider genetic testing
Changes in LYST are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.
