Living with CHARGE syndrome

A condition that affects many parts of the body, including the eyes, heart, nose passages, growth, genitals, and ears.

Understanding CHARGE syndrome

CHARGE syndrome is a disorder that affects many areas of the body.

CHARGE stands for coloboma (a gap in an eye structure), heart defects, atresia choanae (blocked nasal passages), growth retardation, genital differences, and ear differences. The pattern varies among people, and the health problems can be serious in infancy. It begins during pregnancy or at birth.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Heart differences, including holes in the heart wall
  • Differences in the inner ear and ear shape
  • Differences in the soft palate
  • Differences in cranial nerves
  • Differences in the internal genitals
  • Differences in the aortic valve

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include allergy and immune system specialists, brain and nervous system specialists, ear, nose, and throat specialists and eye disease specialists.

  3. Consider genetic testing

Changes in CHD7 are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.

  4. Connect with expert centers

World Craniofacial Foundation, Resolve: The National Infertility Association and Pituitary Network Association may keep lists of experts for this condition.
