Living with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease X-linked recessive 3

A rare inherited nerve condition starting in childhood with weakness and loss of feeling, often with pain or tingling first.

Understanding Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease X-linked recessive 3

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease X-linked recessive 3 is a rare, inherited nerve disease affecting movement and feeling.

It starts in childhood or the teen years with slowly worsening weakness and wasting that begins in the legs and then reaches the arms. People also have loss of feeling in the hands and feet, high foot arches, and absent or reduced reflexes. Pain and tingling are often the first sensory symptoms.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Weakness and wasting in the lower legs
  • Foot drop
  • Absent tendon reflexes
  • Delayed walking
  • Foot differences (equinovarus)
  • Pain and tingling

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists, ear, nose, and throat specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.

  4. Connect with expert centers

Hereditary Neuropathy Foundation Inc., Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association and Muscular Dystrophy Association may keep lists of experts for this condition.
