Living with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 4D
An inherited nerve condition starting in childhood with severe nerve damage, foot differences, and hearing loss.
Understanding Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 4D
Weakness and wasting happen in the muscles farthest from the center of the body, along with foot differences and very slow nerve signals. Hearing loss from nerve damage usually leads to deafness in the third decade. Tongue wasting has also been reported.
Signs & symptoms
Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:
- Weakness in the lower legs
- Wasting of leg muscles
- Hearing loss from nerve damage
- Foot differences
- Delayed motor skills
- Unsteady walking
Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.
Diagnosis
