Living with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 4A

An inherited nerve condition that starts in infancy or early childhood and affects the legs first, with worsening weakness.

Understanding Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 4A

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 4A (CMT4A) is a subtype of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 4 with early onset and nerve damage affecting movement and feeling.

It starts in infancy to early childhood and progresses rapidly. It usually affects the lower legs first and more severely, and later the upper arms and legs. Typical features are weakness and wasting, loss of feeling, and high foot arches. Many children also have delayed motor development.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Weakness and wasting in the lower legs
  • Absent tendon reflexes
  • Loss of feeling in the hands and feet
  • Clubfeet
  • Foot differences
  • Fewer large insulated nerve fibers

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Consider genetic testing

Changes in GDAP1 are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.

  4. Connect with expert centers

Hereditary Neuropathy Foundation Inc., Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association and Muscular Dystrophy Association may keep lists of experts for this condition.
