Living with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2E

An inherited nerve condition with walking trouble and leg weakness that later reaches the arms, starting at a wide range of ages.

Understanding Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2E

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2E is a form of axonal Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, a nerve disease affecting movement and feeling.

It can start between the first and sixth decade of life. It begins with a walking problem and leg weakness that reaches the arms later. Reflexes are reduced or absent, and after some years all people have high foot arches. Some people have hearing loss and tremor when holding a posture.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Trouble walking
  • Weakness in the legs and later the arms
  • Reduced or absent reflexes
  • Foot differences
  • Nerve damage affecting movement
  • Nerve damage affecting feeling

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Consider genetic testing

Changes in NEFL are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.

  4. Connect with expert centers

Hereditary Neuropathy Foundation Inc., Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association and Muscular Dystrophy Association may keep lists of experts for this condition.
