Living with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2B5

A rare inherited nerve condition starting in infancy with slowly worsening weakness, low muscle tone, and loss of feeling.

Understanding Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2B5

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2B5 is a rare, inherited nerve disease that starts in infancy.

It causes slowly worsening weakness and wasting in the muscles farthest from the center of the body, worse in the legs and moderate in the arms. People have mildly delayed motor skills, low muscle tone, and loss of all types of sensation in the hands and feet.

Signs & symptoms

GARD doesn't list common symptoms for this condition. Its summary describes these features:

  • Weakness in the hands and feet
  • Wasting of muscles, worse in the legs
  • Mildly delayed motor skills
  • Low muscle tone (hypotonia)
  • Loss of feeling in the hands and feet

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Consider genetic testing

Changes in NEFL are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.

  4. Connect with expert centers

The Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy may keep lists of experts for this condition.
