Living with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2A2

An inherited nerve condition starting in childhood with weakness, lost reflexes, foot differences, and sometimes other nerve problems.

Understanding Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2A2

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2A2 is a form of inherited nerve disease that starts in childhood.

It causes weakness and lost reflexes that start earlier and more severely in the legs, less sense of pain and temperature, foot differences, shaking when holding a posture, scoliosis, and tight joints. Some people have optic nerve damage, vocal cord weakness, hearing loss, spinal cord differences, or fluid buildup in the brain (hydrocephalus).

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Absent ankle reflexes
  • Less feeling in the hands and feet
  • Foot differences
  • Hand differences
  • Trouble running and climbing stairs
  • Very flexible ankles

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Consider genetic testing

Changes in MFN2 are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.

  4. Connect with expert centers

Hereditary Neuropathy Foundation Inc., Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association and Muscular Dystrophy Association may keep lists of experts for this condition.
