Living with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1B

An inherited nerve condition caused by MPZ gene changes that can start in infancy or much later in adulthood.

Understanding Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1B

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1B (CMT1B) is a form of inherited nerve disease caused by changes in the MPZ gene.

It causes weakness and wasting of the muscles farthest from the center of the body, foot differences, and loss of feeling. Severity varies with the gene change. One form begins in infancy with delayed walking and is often called Dejerine-Sottas syndrome. Another begins much later, after age 40.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Muscle weakness
  • Muscle wasting
  • Absent tendon reflexes
  • Hearing loss
  • Changes in the pupils
  • Nerve damage (peripheral neuropathy)

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Consider genetic testing

Changes in MPZ are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.

  4. Connect with expert centers

Hereditary Neuropathy Foundation Inc., Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association and Muscular Dystrophy Association may keep lists of experts for this condition.

Changes in the MPZ gene cause this condition. It is inherited in an autosomal dominant way, so one changed copy of the gene can cause it.
