Living with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease dominant intermediate B

An inherited nerve condition with mild to moderate, slowly worsening weakness and loss of feeling, sometimes with early cataracts.

Understanding Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease dominant intermediate B

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease dominant intermediate B is a rare, inherited nerve disease with features of both nerve coating damage and nerve fiber damage.

It brings the usual features of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease: weakness and wasting in the hands and feet, loss of feeling there, weak or absent reflexes, and foot differences. It is mild to moderately severe and slowly worsening. Some people have low neutrophils (a type of white blood cell) without symptoms, or early cataracts.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Wasting of muscles in the hands and feet
  • Weakness in the hands and feet
  • Loss of feeling in the hands and feet
  • Reduced or absent reflexes
  • Foot differences
  • Early cataracts in some people

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Consider genetic testing

Changes in DNM2 are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.

  4. Connect with expert centers

The Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy may keep lists of experts for this condition.
