Living with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease axonal type 2Q

A rare inherited nerve condition starting in the teen or adult years with slowly worsening weakness in the lower legs.

Understanding Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease axonal type 2Q

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease axonal type 2Q is a rare, inherited form of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease with slowly worsening weakness and wasting in the hands and feet.

It starts in the teen years or adulthood. Weakness is mostly in the lower legs and happens on both sides. People also have weak or absent reflexes, high foot arches, and mild to moderate loss of deep sensation.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Weakness in the lower legs
  • Muscle wasting
  • High-arched feet (pes cavus)
  • Reduced reflexes
  • Less sense of vibration in the feet
  • Changes in sensation

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Consider genetic testing

Changes in DHTKD1 are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.

  4. Connect with expert centers

The Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy may keep lists of experts for this condition.
