Living with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease axonal type 2L
An inherited nerve condition that starts in the teen or adult years and slowly causes weakness in the legs.
Understanding Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease axonal type 2L
Onset is between ages 15 and 33. People have weakness in both legs, sometimes in the hands, weak or absent reflexes, loss of feeling in the lower legs, and often high foot arches. Progress is slow.
Signs & symptoms
Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:
- High-arched feet (pes cavus)
- Fewer large insulated nerve fibers
- Weakness in both legs
- Weak or absent reflexes
- Loss of feeling in the lower legs
- Curved spine (scoliosis) in some people
Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.
Diagnosis
- 1Talk with your doctor
Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.
- 2See a specialist
Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists and genetic specialists.
- 3Consider genetic testing
Changes in HSPB8 are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.
- 4Connect with expert centers
The Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy may keep lists of experts for this condition.
