Living with Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease, axonal, type 2GG

An inherited nerve condition that causes slowly worsening weakness and loss of feeling in the hands and feet.

Understanding Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease, axonal, type 2GG

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease axonal type 2GG is a rare inherited nerve condition affecting both movement and feeling.

It shows the usual features of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease: weakness and wasting in the muscles farthest from the center of the body, loss of feeling there, weak or absent reflexes, and foot differences. Signs begin in the first or second decade of life and progress steadily until about the fourth decade. GARD lists onset in adulthood.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Weakness and wasting in hands and feet
  • Loss of feeling in hands and feet
  • Absent tendon reflexes
  • Foot drop
  • High-arched feet (pes cavus)
  • Trouble walking

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Consider genetic testing

Changes in GBF1 are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.

  4. Connect with expert centers

Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association and The Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy may keep lists of experts for this condition.
