Living with Cataract - microcornea syndrome

A rare genetic eye condition with cataracts from birth and an unusually small cornea, without other body-wide differences.

Understanding Cataract - microcornea syndrome

Cataract - microcornea syndrome is a rare genetic condition with cataracts from birth and a small cornea (microcornea).

The eye is otherwise normal, with a cornea smaller than 10 mm across. The cataract is usually in both eyes at the back of the lens and can grow into a complete cataract after vision has matured. Other eye differences such as nearsightedness may also occur. It is not linked to other body-wide differences.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Cataract (cloudy lens)
  • Small cornea (microcornea)
  • Nearsightedness (myopia)

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include eye disease specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
