Living with Blast phase chronic myelogenous leukemia, BCR-ABL1 positive

An advanced phase of a blood cancer in which many immature white blood cells are made.

Understanding Blast phase chronic myelogenous leukemia, BCR-ABL1 positive

Blast phase chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), BCR-ABL1 positive, is an advanced phase of CML with many immature white blood cells (blasts).

CML involves a swap between chromosomes 9 and 22 called the Philadelphia chromosome. This makes an abnormal enzyme (tyrosine kinase) that causes abnormal white blood cell production. In the blast phase, 20% or more of cells in blood or bone marrow are blasts, and the disease behaves like acute leukemia.
