Living with Bilateral striopallidodentate calcinosis
A condition with calcium deposits in blood vessels of the brain that can cause movement and mood or thinking changes in adulthood.
Understanding Bilateral striopallidodentate calcinosis
Deposits show on medical imaging, mostly in the basal ganglia (deep brain areas that help control movement). Movement and psychiatric or behavior problems usually begin in mid-adulthood and worsen over time. Severity varies, and some people have no symptoms.
Signs & symptoms
Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:
- Slow movements (bradykinesia) and stiffness
- Tremor
- Uncontrolled limb movements (choreoathetosis)
- Personality changes, anxiety, or psychosis
- Memory and thinking decline (dementia)
- Headache, dizziness (vertigo), or seizures
Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.
