Living with Benign paroxysmal tonic upgaze of childhood with ataxia

A rare childhood movement condition with episodes of upward eye gaze and unsteadiness.

Understanding Benign paroxysmal tonic upgaze of childhood with ataxia

Benign paroxysmal tonic upgaze of childhood with ataxia is a rare movement condition with episodes of the eyes staring upward along with unsteadiness.

Episodes involve a sustained upward turn of both eyes, with side-to-side eye movements preserved. Children also have ataxia (unsteady walking and poor balance and coordination) but are otherwise healthy. Eye flickering (nystagmus) is also seen. Symptoms start in newborns and infants, and generally go away on their own within 1 to 2 years.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Eyes turning upward in episodes
  • Abnormal eye movements
  • Rapid, rhythmic eye movements (nystagmus)
  • Unsteadiness during episodes (episodic ataxia)

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Consider genetic testing

Changes in DAGLA are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.
