Living with Becker nevus syndrome

A rare condition with a Becker nevus skin patch plus breast, muscle, or bone differences on the same side.

Understanding Becker nevus syndrome

Becker nevus syndrome is a rare condition in which a Becker nevus (a darker skin patch) occurs with other differences on the same side of the body.

These can include underdeveloped breast tissue and skin, muscle, or bone differences. Bone features may include a smaller shoulder area, curved spine (scoliosis), fused ribs, and a shorter arm. It can show up at any time in life. It is thought to occur by chance, with no family history.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Darker skin patches (hyperpigmented spots)
  • Underdeveloped breast (hypoplasia)
  • Extra nipple
  • Muscle wasting around the shoulder
  • Chest that sinks in or sticks out
  • Smaller or shorter limbs

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include cancer specialists, genetic specialists, maternal-fetal medicine specialists and skin, hair, and nail specialists.

  3. Consider genetic testing

Changes in ACTB are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.
