Living with Bartter disease type 3

An inherited kidney condition that upsets the body's salt and potassium balance, usually beginning after the first year of life.

Understanding Bartter disease type 3

Bartter disease type 3 is a form of Bartter syndrome that usually begins after the first year of life.

Children can have slow weight gain (failure to thrive). Blood tests show low potassium and chloride, with the blood becoming too alkaline, and high renin and aldosterone hormones. Blood pressure is low to normal. Onset can be at a variety of ages.

Signs & symptoms

GARD doesn't list a symptom list. The summary describes these features:

  • Slow weight gain (failure to thrive)
  • Low potassium in the blood
  • Low chloride in the blood
  • Blood that is too alkaline
  • High renin and aldosterone levels
  • Low to normal blood pressure

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include genetic specialists and kidney specialists.

  3. Consider genetic testing

Changes in CLCNKB are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.
