Living with Baritosis

An extremely rare, mild lung condition caused by breathing in barium dust.

Understanding Baritosis

Baritosis is an extremely rare, mild type of lung condition (pneumoconiosis) caused by breathing in barium sulfate dust.

Pneumoconiosis happens when inhaled particles build up and cause a reaction in the lung tissue. In baritosis there is little or no scarring (fibrosis). It is well described in workers who crush and grind compounds containing barium. Lung scans show very fine dots, ring-like marks, and some slightly larger nodules.

Signs & symptoms

GARD doesn't list specific symptoms for this condition. The summary describes these lung findings:

  • Very fine dots in the lungs
  • Ring-like marks in the lungs
  • Slightly larger nodules in the lungs
  • Little or no lung scarring

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Your doctor may refer you to a specialist who knows rare conditions.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
