Living with Autosomal recessive spinocerebellar ataxia 20
A rare inherited condition with severe balance problems, intellectual disability, and coarsening facial features, starting in infancy.
Understanding Autosomal recessive spinocerebellar ataxia 20
It begins in infancy. People have moderate to severe intellectual disability and global developmental delay. Facial features slowly become more coarse, and the head is relatively large. Seizures are not part of this condition. Hearing loss can occur, and scans show a small or underdeveloped cerebellum.
Signs & symptoms
Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:
- Severe balance and coordination problems (ataxia)
- Severe intellectual disability
- Delayed or absent speech
- Coarse facial features and large tongue
- Low muscle tone
- Hearing loss from the inner ear
Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.
Diagnosis
- 1Talk with your doctor
Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.
- 2See a specialist
Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists and genetic specialists.
- 3Consider genetic testing
Changes in SNX14 are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.
- 4Connect with expert centers
National Ataxia Foundation may keep lists of experts for this condition.
