Living with Autosomal recessive inherited pseudoxanthoma elasticum

An inherited condition in which calcium builds up in the skin, eyes, and blood vessels.

Understanding Autosomal recessive inherited pseudoxanthoma elasticum

Autosomal recessive inherited pseudoxanthoma elasticum is a rare genetic condition that affects connective tissue, the skin, the eyes, and blood vessels.

Over time, calcium builds up where it should not and elastic fibers in the skin, retina, and blood vessel walls break into pieces. It can start at any time in life. Skin can look loose and wrinkled, and eye and blood vessel problems can develop.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Loose, wrinkled skin that lacks elasticity
  • Lines in the retina (angioid streaks)
  • Bleeding in the retina
  • Narrowed arteries
  • Leg pain when walking (intermittent claudication)
  • Easy bruising

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include autoimmune and inflammatory disease specialists, bone and joint specialists, brain and nervous system specialists and eye disease specialists.

  3. Consider genetic testing

Changes in ABCC6 are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.

  4. Connect with expert centers

Children's Cardiomyopathy Foundation may keep lists of experts for this condition.
