Living with Autosomal dominant primary microcephaly

A genetic condition in which the head and brain are smaller than usual.

Understanding Autosomal dominant primary microcephaly

Autosomal dominant primary microcephaly is an inherited form of microcephaly, a condition in which the head is smaller than usual.

Signs may be seen during pregnancy, at birth, or in infancy. Besides a small head size, other features can include short height and fewer teeth than usual.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Abnormally small head (microcephaly)
  • Short stature
  • Fewer teeth than usual (tooth agenesis)
  • Eyes that turn inward, alternating (esotropia)
  • Eye movements that shake side to side (less common)
  • Prominent ears (less common)

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
