Living with Autosomal dominant optic atrophy classic form
An inherited eye nerve condition that slowly causes vision loss in both eyes.
Understanding Autosomal dominant optic atrophy classic form
It is one of the most common forms of inherited optic nerve disease. Vision loss gets worse over time and usually begins in the first ten years of life. It can include trouble with color vision and gaps in the field of view.
Signs & symptoms
Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:
- Damage to the optic nerve (optic atrophy)
- Moderately reduced sharpness of vision
- Abnormal color vision
- Pale area on the optic nerve (optic disc pallor)
- Inner ear hearing loss (sensorineural)
- Nerve damage affecting feeling and movement
Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

- 1Talk with your doctor
Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

Specialists who may be involved include eye disease specialists and genetic specialists.
- 3Consider genetic testing
Changes in OPA1 are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.
