Living with Autosomal dominant keratitis

An inherited eye condition with a cloudy cornea and extra blood vessels, often with underdevelopment of the central retina.

Understanding Autosomal dominant keratitis

Autosomal dominant keratitis is an inherited eye condition in which the cornea becomes cloudy and grows blood vessels.

It is often linked with underdevelopment of the macula (the central part of the retina), which affects sharp vision. It starts in childhood.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Cloudy cornea
  • New blood vessels in the cornea
  • Reduced sharpness of vision
  • Underdeveloped macula (fovea)
  • Underdeveloped iris tissue
  • Corneal stem cell deficiency

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include eye disease specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Consider genetic testing

Changes in PAX6 are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.
