Living with ATPase cation transporting 13A2 related juvenile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis

A rare inherited nerve condition that starts in childhood with worsening balance, movement, speech, and thinking problems.

Understanding ATPase cation transporting 13A2 related juvenile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis

ATPase cation transporting 13A2 related juvenile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis is a rare inherited condition that causes worsening movement, balance, and thinking problems starting in childhood.

It is a type of neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis, in which waste material builds up in nerve cells. Features include ataxia (balance and coordination trouble), trouble speaking and swallowing, muscle twitches, stiffness, slow movements, and intellectual decline.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Balance problems (postural instability)
  • Slow movements (bradykinesia)
  • Stiffness (rigidity) and tremor
  • Muscle twitches (myoclonus) and dystonia
  • Cognitive impairment
  • Parkinsonism that responds to dopamine medicine

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists, eye disease specialists, genetic specialists and seizure and epilepsy specialists.

  3. Consider genetic testing

Changes in ATP13A2 are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.

  4. Connect with expert centers

BDSRA Foundation, Epilepsy Foundation and Parkinson & Movement Disorder Alliance may keep lists of experts for this condition.
