Living with Arthrogryposis- oculomotor limitation-electroretinal anomalies syndrome

An inherited condition with stiff joints from birth and eye muscle and vision differences, with normal intelligence.

Understanding Arthrogryposis- oculomotor limitation-electroretinal anomalies syndrome

Arthrogryposis-oculomotor limitation-electroretinal anomalies syndrome is an inherited condition with stiff limb joints from birth and differences in eye movement and the retina.

People have multiple joint contractures in the limbs, without a primary nerve or muscle disease affecting limb function. Eye features include a drooping eyelid, limited eye movement, and crossed eyes. Intelligence is normal. It is noticed in newborns.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Stiff, bent finger joints from birth
  • Clubfoot on both sides
  • Drooping upper eyelid (ptosis)
  • Eye muscle paralysis (ophthalmoplegia)
  • Optic nerve damage and visual impairment
  • Abnormal retina test (electroretinogram)

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include bone and joint specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Consider genetic testing

Changes in PIEZO2 are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.

  4. Connect with expert centers

Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita Support Inc. may keep lists of experts for this condition.
