Living with Arthrogryposis multiplex congenita-whistling face syndrome

An extremely rare condition present from birth with stiff joints, a small mouth with a whistling look, and severe developmental delay.

Understanding Arthrogryposis multiplex congenita-whistling face syndrome

Arthrogryposis multiplex congenita-whistling face syndrome is an extremely rare type of arthrogryposis with stiff joints and a small, puckered mouth.

People have multiple stiff joints and a very small mouth that gives a whistling appearance, which can cause feeding, swallowing, and speech difficulties. The face has little expression. Other features include severe developmental delay, drooling, temperature changes, and seizures. Some have Pierre-Robin sequence (a small jaw and cleft palate). It is seen during pregnancy and in newborns.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Stiff joints
  • Small mouth with a whistling look
  • Small lower jaw (micrognathia)
  • Low muscle tone
  • Severe developmental delay
  • Seizures

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

  2. See a specialist
