Living with Arthrogryposis-ectodermal dysplasia-other anomalies syndrome

A rare genetic syndrome present from birth with stiff joints, missing teeth, nail and skin differences, and slow growth.

Understanding Arthrogryposis-ectodermal dysplasia-other anomalies syndrome

Arthrogryposis-ectodermal dysplasia-other anomalies syndrome is a rare genetic syndrome with stiff, bent joints and changes in the teeth, nails, and skin.

People have bent fingers and joint contractures (joints fixed in a bent position) with muscle wasting. Ectodermal features include fewer teeth, enamel differences, broken nails, and skin that sweats little and bruises and scars easily. Growth is slow, the head is small, and the spine curves. GARD notes there have been no further descriptions in the medical literature since 1992.

Signs & symptoms

GARD doesn't list specific symptoms for this condition, but its summary describes these features:

  • Bent fingers and stiff joints (contractures)
  • Muscle wasting
  • Fewer teeth than usual and enamel differences
  • Nails that break lengthwise
  • Skin that sweats little and bruises or scars easily
  • Slow growth and a small head

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include bone and joint specialists, genetic specialists and skin, hair, and nail specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.

  4. Connect with expert centers

National Foundation for Ectodermal Dysplasias may keep lists of experts for this condition.
