Living with Anti-glomerular basement membrane disease
An autoimmune disease in which the body attacks the lungs and kidneys.
Understanding Anti-glomerular basement membrane disease
Antibodies attack collagen in the kidney filters (glomeruli) and the lung air sacs. This causes kidney inflammation (glomerulonephritis) and bleeding in the lungs. It was once called Goodpasture syndrome or Goodpasture disease. It can begin at a variety of ages.
Signs & symptoms
Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:
- Blood in the urine (hematuria)
- Coughing up blood (hemoptysis)
- Cough and chest pain
- Trouble breathing
- Low red blood cells (anemia)
- Inflamed blood vessels (vasculitis)
Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.
Diagnosis
- 1Talk with your doctor
Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.
- 2See a specialist
Specialists who may be involved include autoimmune and inflammatory disease specialists, kidney specialists and lung and breathing specialists.
- 3Ask which tests can help
Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
- 4Connect with expert centers
Autoimmune Association and Vasculitis Foundation may keep lists of experts for this condition.
