Living with Anterior segment dysgenesis 3
A rare eye condition present from birth with dark, smooth-looking irises and early-onset glaucoma.
Understanding Anterior segment dysgenesis 3
The differences eventually lead to glaucoma (high pressure in the eye) at an early age. The irises are unusually dark and lack their usual pattern, giving them a smooth look. Brown irises look dark chocolate and blue irises look dark slate gray.
Signs & symptoms
Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:
- Pupil that is off-center (ectopia pupillae)
- Underdeveloped iris tissue (iris stroma)
- A ridge on the cornea (posterior embryotoxon)
- Unusually dark irises with a smooth look
- Early-onset glaucoma
Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.
