Living with Angioma serpiginosum

A harmless skin condition present from childhood with small purple dots, mostly on the legs and buttocks.

Understanding Angioma serpiginosum

Angioma serpiginosum is a benign (harmless) skin disease present from birth, with widening of tiny blood vessels near the surface of the skin.

It shows up as small purple dots, usually on the legs and buttocks, that follow the lines of Blaschko (invisible lines along which skin cells grow). GARD lists the onset as childhood.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Small purple dots on the skin
  • Flat, discolored patches (macules)
  • Skin redness (erythema)
  • Skin blood vessel differences

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include genetic specialists and skin, hair, and nail specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
