Living with Acute infantile liver failure-cerebellar ataxia-peripheral sensory motor neuropathy syndrome

A rare inherited condition with repeated episodes of liver failure in infancy, plus balance, nerve, and movement problems.

Understanding Acute infantile liver failure-cerebellar ataxia-peripheral sensory motor neuropathy syndrome

Acute infantile liver failure-cerebellar ataxia-peripheral sensory motor neuropathy syndrome is a rare inherited liver and nerve condition that starts in infancy.

Babies have repeated episodes of acute liver failure, which can lead to scarring of the liver (fibrosis) and an enlarged liver and spleen. Other features include delayed motor development, balance and walking problems, tremor, stuttering, and weakness and numbness, mostly in the lower legs. Some people have mild intellectual disability.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Sudden liver failure
  • Enlarged liver and spleen
  • Delayed development
  • Trouble with balance when walking (gait ataxia)
  • Weakness in the lower legs
  • Shaking when reaching for things (intention tremor)

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists, digestive system specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Consider genetic testing

Changes in SCYL1 are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.

  4. Connect with expert centers

National Ataxia Foundation and The Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy may keep lists of experts for this condition.
