Living with Action myoclonus-renal failure syndrome
An inherited condition with muscle jerks, tremor, and often kidney disease, usually starting in the teens or twenties.
Understanding Action myoclonus-renal failure syndrome
Movement problems usually start with a tremor in the fingers and hands, which can spread and become myoclonic jerks triggered by movement. Anxiety, stress, excitement, or fatigue can make them worse. Some people have seizures, nerve damage in the limbs, or hearing loss. When kidneys are affected, an early sign is protein in the urine, and kidney function can worsen over time. Not everyone has kidney problems. GARD lists onset as teenager and adult.
Signs & symptoms
Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:
- Muscle jerks (myoclonus)
- Action tremor
- Kidney disease (nephrotic syndrome)
- Seizures
- Unsteady walk
- Trouble swallowing
Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.
