Living with Acrorenal field defect, ectodermal dysplasia, and lipoatrophic diabetes

A rare genetic condition with diabetes, loss of body fat, thin hair, small breasts, and kidney and urinary differences.

Understanding Acrorenal field defect, ectodermal dysplasia, and lipoatrophic diabetes

Acrorenal field defect, ectodermal dysplasia, and lipoatrophic diabetes is a rare genetic disease with diabetes and loss of body fat.

Features include lipoatrophic diabetes, mild facial differences, ectodermal dysplasia (thin hair and tooth and nail differences), small or underdeveloped breasts, and kidney and urinary or genital differences. Skeletal differences and an enlarged liver and spleen have also been reported. GARD lists onset as newborn.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Loss of body fat (lipoatrophy)
  • Sparse eyebrows and hair
  • Small or absent breasts
  • Kidney and urinary tract differences
  • Enlarged liver and spleen

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include genetic specialists, hormone specialists, kidney specialists and skin, hair, and nail specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.

  4. Connect with expert centers

National Foundation for Ectodermal Dysplasias may keep lists of experts for this condition.
