Living with Acro-renal-mandibular syndrome

A rare condition present at birth with differences in the hands, feet, kidneys, and lower jaw.

Understanding Acro-renal-mandibular syndrome

Acro-renal-mandibular syndrome is a rare condition with limb differences and kidney differences present from birth.

It includes split hand and split foot, missing or small kidneys or polycystic kidneys, uterine differences, and a very small lower jaw. Other features can include poorly developed lungs, low amniotic fluid, and hip dislocation. GARD lists onset as during pregnancy and as a newborn.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Split hand and split foot
  • Missing or small kidney
  • Small lower jaw (micrognathia)
  • Heart-shaped uterus
  • Poorly developed lungs
  • Hip dislocation

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include genetic specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.

InheritanceAutosomal Recessive

GARD says changes in genes (also called variants) cause this condition. An autosomal recessive pattern has been suggested, so a child would inherit a changed copy of the gene from each parent.
