Living with 48,XYYY syndrome

A rare condition affecting only males, with developmental delay, especially in speech, tall height, and acne.

Understanding 48,XYYY syndrome

48,XYYY syndrome is a rare Y chromosome condition that affects only males.

It brings mild to moderate developmental delay, especially in speech, and normal to mild intellectual disability. Other features are large, irregular teeth with poor enamel, tall stature, and acne. Boys generally have typical genitals, but low testosterone activity and infertility are often reported in adult males. GARD lists onset as during pregnancy, at birth, and as an infant.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Delayed speech and language
  • Global developmental delay
  • Acne
  • Low testicular function (hypogonadism)
  • Fused forearm bones (radioulnar synostosis)
  • Feeding difficulties

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists, genetic specialists and urinary and male reproductive system specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.

  4. Connect with expert centers

Association for X and Y Chromosome Variations and Resolve: The National Infertility Association may keep lists of experts for this condition.
