Living with 46 XX gonadal dysgenesis
A condition where the ovaries do not develop properly, which can delay puberty and affect fertility.
Understanding 46 XX gonadal dysgenesis
It can lead to premature ovarian failure, either because the gonads do not develop or do not respond to hormones that stimulate their growth. Puberty may be delayed, periods may not start (primary amenorrhea), and fertility may be lower. Bone density can also be low. GARD lists onset as teenager and adult.
Signs & symptoms
Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:
- Early menopause (premature ovarian insufficiency)
- Delayed puberty
- No periods (primary amenorrhea)
- Small or absent breasts or uterus
- Lower fertility
- Low bone density
Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.
