Living with 2p21 microdeletion syndrome

A rare genetic condition that can bring kidney stones, seizures, low muscle tone, and severe delays in growth and development.

Understanding 2p21 microdeletion syndrome

2p21 microdeletion syndrome is a genetic condition that includes cystinuria, newborn seizures, and developmental delay.

It consists of cystinuria (a kidney and urine condition), seizures in newborns, low muscle tone (hypotonia), severe growth and developmental delay, and distinct facial features. Lactic acidemia (extra lactic acid in the blood) is also part of it. GARD lists onset as the newborn and infant period.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Seizures
  • Low muscle tone (hypotonia)
  • Global developmental delay
  • Slow growth
  • Kidney stones
  • Low hormone activity from the gonads

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include genetic specialists and kidney specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
