Living with 19p13.12 microdeletion syndrome

A newly described genetic condition that can bring delayed development, delayed language, hearing loss, and distinct facial features.

Understanding 19p13.12 microdeletion syndrome

19p13.12 microdeletion syndrome is a newly described genetic condition caused by a missing piece of chromosome 19.

People with this condition have moderate to severe developmental delay and delayed language. They may have hearing loss in both ears and distinct facial features. Heart rhythm or heart structure differences can occur. GARD lists onset as the newborn and infant period.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Global developmental delay
  • Delayed speech and language
  • Low muscle tone (hypotonia)
  • Small head size (microcephaly)
  • Heart rhythm differences (arrhythmia)
  • Hole between the upper heart chambers

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include genetic specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
